HISC Optimist Open 2025

Magic Marine and Hayling Island hosted an Optimist Open Meeting on May 10/11th 2025. With over 100 Optimists over the 3 fleets, there was fantastic racing had by all.

Tata Steel Dragon Series 2025

Last Saturday, May 10th, over 26 sailors took part in the first event of the South Wales Dragon Series at Tata Steel Sailing Club. The Dragon Series is a regional set of events hosted by Welsh clubs in their regions, providing sailors opportunities to race outside of their home club. For the South Wales series the clubs involved are; Tata Steel, Llandegfedd, Mumbles and Cardiff Bay. These events are supported by RYA Cymru Wales with the provision of a qualified coach in attendance to help and encourage those taking part in their first sailing event. With fantastic weather and wind, a total of 4 races were completed during the day for all the fleets.

Eric Twiname Junior Championships 2025

Hosted at Rutland Sailing Club, Ruland on 3-5th May 2025.

The Eric Twiname Junior Championships is the largest Junior Championships of the year with over 280 boats competing in the various classes. Optimists, RS Teras, Toppers, RS Fevas and ILCA 4s took to the water to take part in the event which included some new and different racing formats, with Short races being around 10 minutes long, Long races around 25 minutes long and a Marathon race aiming to be around 1 hour.

RYA Youth Nationals 2025

Hosted at Plas Heli, Pwllheli, the home of the Welsh National Sailing Academy on the week of 12 - 18th April 2025.

The RYA Youth Nationals is the UK's premier Youth sailing event, boasting a wide range of British Youth Sailing recognised classes; ILCA 6 & 7, 420, 29er, Nacra 15 and now even foiling classes. The results are used to select the British Youth Sailing Team, who will represent Great Britain at international regattas. This includes the Youth World Championships as well as the domestic youth squad for the year ahead.

IOCA Selections 2025

Hosted at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Portland on 2-5th May 2025.

The IOCA Selections sees the top Optimist Sailors in the UK compete over 4 days to gain their place on an IOCA Team, with limited places per team the racing of the highest quality. These teams attend large international events such as the World Championships, European Championships, Irish Nationals and many others.

CoM Minutes - Tuesday, 19th May 2025

Summary

Correspondence 

Response sent to the 707 Association in relation to a boat being returned in an unfit condition.

Transfer from Full to Associate membership agreed.

Commodore’s Review

Confirmed that no written questions were received prior to the AGM.

Companies House have been updated with retiring and new Directors.

Catamaran surveyor’s report remains outstanding.

‘To Do’ list introduced, and to be reviewed, ready for discussion at the next CoM.

Positive feedback form members following Clubhouse reopening. However, agreed that communication to members needs to be improved, which will be facilitated through the fortnightly Commodore’s Update.

Club ‘Facebook Accounts’ to be discussed at the next CoM.

Incidents reported where some members are trying to access pontoons after hours, and compromising site security. To be discussed once CCTV has been accessed.

Simon Gadsby welcomed onto CoM to support Sailing Secretary.

The functions of CoM and General Manager were discussed, where it was noted that many roles previously managed by CoM has now been devolved to the GM.

Operations Report 

Club income has increased but not yet reflected in the accounts.

The Clubhouse Redevelopment project is nearing completion, which the Sun Terrace and changing rooms on schedule for completion by the end of the working week.

Replacement RIB due for delivery on 20th May.

Following the acknowledgement of several unkempt boats in the Marina, it was agreed that byelaws need to be enforced.

On Wednesday, 14th May the Club was inspected by the Food Standards Agency, Trading Standards and Cardiff City Council. This unannounced inspection was promoted following an anonymous complaint made against the club.

Following a thorough inspection, no issues were identified.

Activities 

Dinghy Section AGM has taken place.

Life Jacket Workshop arranged for 30th May.

Cardiff University have had grant funding approved for 707.

Training Secretary 

Attendance at ongoing, Friday Evening Workshops have been well attended.

Membership Secretary 

Discussion concerning changes to membership application.

AOB 

Agreed to discuss Fishing Risk Assessment and populate on the ‘to-do list’.

Agreed to fly the Pride Flag for the month of June and to update all club members of this request and action.

Date of next meeting scheduled for 16th June 2025 at 18:30.

Notice to Mariners

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING CUMBERLAND BASIN LOCK GATES – 04/07/25

We regret to inform you that due to a malfunction in one of our outer lock gates, we will be operating at a reduced locking capacity for the next four weeks. This will unfortunately affect the locking service for vessels attending the Harbour Festival from the sea.

We kindly ask that you inform your club members who have booked to attend the festival that we may need to adjust their lock booking times and dates. Please have them contact the Watch House at 0117 9273633 over the weekend to discuss their booking and any accommodations we can make to ensure their attendance at the event. If there is no answer, please leave a name and number so we can return their call.

For more details, please refer to the local Notice to Mariners 22/25 (see below), ‘Reduced Operation of Cumberland Basin Lock Gates,’ which explains the issues we are currently experiencing.
