History of CBYC
Founded in 1932 as Penarth Motor Boat and Sailing Club, we became Cardiff Bay Yacht Club in 1999, and our club has gone from strength to strength over the best part of a century.
Thanks to those who came before us, we are fortunate to be located on the waterfront of Cardiff Bay. Today, the club is one of Wales’s premier water sports clubs.
We offer an active dinghy section for youth and adults, competitive yachting and sports-boat racing, a thriving angling section, a large cruising cohort, and an ever-increasing social calendar.
The club was originally founded by a group of working-class boating enthusiasts living in and around Penarth, South Wales. Even during WWII, the club’s associations were not entirely broken. Several members continued to meet regularly at Penarth Social Club, often entertaining fellow members on leave from the Forces.
In 1945, club activities resumed, and in 1947, the first clubhouse was established following the purchase of a small townhouse in Penarth for just £300. This remained the club’s home until 1958, when increased membership and growing interest led to the acquisition of a new lease for larger premises on Penarth Dock.
In the early 1970s, the Penarth Dock Complex was purchased by a developer, which compelled the club to relocate. It was at this time that negotiations began for the club’s current location in Ely Harbour. In 1973, with help from the National Sports Council, the club built a clubhouse, slipway, changing rooms, and showers.
The club is very proud of its history, and the move to new premises meant that, in addition to our own club history, we inherited local heritage—such as Ely Harbour. The northern entrance is located beneath the club car park, and the frame is still visible today within the club grounds. To this day, members of the public visit the club to view the impressive remains.
Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, the club continued to grow. In 1985, to accommodate further growth in membership, development of a new clubhouse facility was set in motion. In 1998, after many years of seeking planning permission and securing new tenure leases, the new clubhouse was officially opened by H.R.H. The Princess Royal.
In 2001, the club purchased the land which is now home to the club. Then in 2014, to support further expansion, a new development plan was submitted. In 2023, a plan was agreed, with building work commencing in December 2024. Thanks to countless hours committed by volunteers and a dedicated team of builders, the project was completed in May 2025.
The results were outstanding!
Our clubhouse now boasts two bars with stunning bay views. The Clubhouse Bar & Restaurant, with its panoramic outlook, is open five days a week and features a popular dining space. The venue hosts a wide range of social events, including live music, afternoon tea, stand-up comedy, and even a popular drag night.
The changing rooms and toilets have been reconfigured and refitted to a premium standard.
The Training Centre has also gained a dedicated, fully functioning training room within the clubhouse, providing a spacious environment for pre-sailing briefings and theory workshops.
Since reopening, usage of the new facilities has exceeded expectations—and we believe this is only the beginning.

Memory Wall project
As part of our recent clubhouse redevelopment project, we launched a Memory Wall Project, which is now featured on the main staircase. With such a rich club history, we quickly realised that this project would evolve over time and continue to grow as new material is donated to the club.

Alan Thorne
Alan Thorne My family and I have been members for 13 years, I am currently an active member in a variety of committees. (Fishing section/ social & regatta) I've grown into the overseeing and organising the social committee, and arranging events like, Micheal Buble, Children's Pamto, ABBA night and lot more. My wish is to represent the membership in an already established CoM, I'm keen to help in the growth of all aspects of the club, and bridge the gap between the different sections.

Roger Wallington Roger was one of the first appointed Energy Managers in the UK due to his working knowledge of manufacturing processes and environmental engineering systems. He later went on to manage a European Project in the early 1990s developing smart technology to control heating and appliances, a technology now maturing. He also managed the development of computer systems and programmes now used by the privatised electricity industry. On retirement in 1999 he became an Accredited Consultant for the Carbon Trust and assisted industry and commerce throughout the UK understand their energy usage, implement efficient systems and set up energy management operations. Sailing Secretary
Nick Hankins
Nick Hankins I've been a CBYC member for 24 years. I started sailing at an early age, racing yachts and dinghies on the Solent, competing at Nationals, Europeans and Worlds. Having spent a number of years involved in the club keelboat racing and more recently the dinghy section, i've been a Dinghy Com member for past 4 years and current Dinghy Chair. I have a professional career in aerospace at senior management level for a large multinational. Currently I'm self-employed running an aviation consultancy and marine limited businesses. I believe I have a good knowledge of the club and the correct business and social attributes to help all sections of the club to thrive.
Committee Members
Mike Kenrick
Mike Kenrick I have been a member of CBYC, formerly PMBSC, for 35 years, having started racing in J24s and crewing on various boats owned by both past and present members. I transitioned to cruising when my daughters were born and have since owned three boats: an Achilles 24, a Starlight 30, and, most recently, I’ve been a part-owner of Segeta, a Beneteau 393. I look forward to continuing my contribution to the club and hope to add value through the experience I’ve gained both within the club and through my professional background in large corporations.
Training School Principal
Simon Gadsby
Simon joined the club in 2022 with an extensive sailing background, having raced Toppers, ILCAs, and 29ers. He also team raced while at Newcastle University. Drawing on his racing experience, Simon has instructed and coached within the training section. He currently sits on the Dinghy Committee and actively encourages youth engagement across all areas of the club.
Committee Member
Wayne Duke
Most of you know me as Duke. Almost every year, I am asked by club members to apply to join the C.O.M, so I'm giving it a go! I am very much a people person and I've got a big personality! I enjoy using the clubhouse facilities most weekends. and socialising with other members. I am also an avid sailor. During my time on CoM, I intend to listen to club members and take their feedback forward to other CoM members.
