Checkmate XV - Summer Adventures!

This year, Checkmate XV, owned by club member Phil Cook, competed in the Half Ton Cup 2025, held in Torquay.

She finished 7th overall, expertly crewed by Mark Lewis, Geoff Carter, Simon Gadsby, Gethin Gronow, Jack Preece, Owen Kinsella, and Phil Cook.

It was quite the adventure—from high, hard winds and missing sheets to the recovery of said sheets, epic racing after the winds eased, and some superb post-race socialising!

RYA Safe & Fun

The RYA Safe and Fun course is a requirement for all newly qualified Level 2 Racing Coaches, RYA Dinghy Instructors, RYA Keelboat Instructors, RYA Windsurf Instructors and RYA Senior Instructors.

RYA VHF Marine Radio Course (SRC)

This one-day course (plus exam) is perfect for anyone looking to operate a marine VHF radio — an essential skill for safe and effective communication while boating. You’ll learn about radio functionality, how to relay information clearly and quickly, and get hands-on experience using and speaking over the radio.

This course covers the Short Range Certificate (SRC), which is the minimum qualification required by law for those using VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on board any British flagged vessel.

RYA First Aid

Our one-day RYA First Aid Course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. It provides the perfect opportunity to gain this valuable and practical qualification.

Ideal for sailors of all kinds — including those working towards their Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster or Advanced Powerboat certification.

RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship - Online

The Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course is an interactive course.

A basic introduction to navigation and safety for anyone new to boating:  sailors, powerboaters, sea anglers, divers and boat masters.  Also useful for experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers.  It is the perfect stepping stone to the more in-depth Day Skipper and Yacht master theory course.
