Obituary, Alan Savage
We are sad to announce the loss of a Club friend and lifelong member, Alan Savage who passed away at home with family at his bedside after a long illness on Monday 8 November. Alan’s funeral will be held at Barry Crematorium at 11.00 am on Wednesday 8 December, and at the Clubhouse Quarterdeck from midday on, all are welcome to celebrate and share stories of Alan’s life.
Alan joined the Club in the early sixties and held most positions on the Management including Commodore, Vice President & President and was always happiest with spanners in his hand physically helping and the Club owed him in that respect, a lot. In those days, members did all the new work and maintenance themselves and Alan was one of many of a bunch who got the Club to where it is today. When we got our first 25 year lease or less at the present site, the subway under the River Ely was all there including the turnstiles and the cast iron entrance which is now at the top of the main slipway. The old buildings had formed a piggery, the pigs had gone and we had to start from scratch, Alan obtained the old Contractors canteen from Power Station “B" constructions, I believe, new foundations built and the building reassembled on the new foundations and was fitted out again by members and with many alterations again by the members, lasted until our present Clubhouse was built as a replacement.
The Club and Alan’s family would appreciate if members could let any other persons who knew Alan, members or non members are welcome at the Club.
I hope his family won't mind me using this picture from https://www.facebook.com/alan.savage.503
