Shanghai and Nimrod Cup - 2018





The organising authority is Cardiff Bay Yacht Club (CBYC) with assistance from PCC and SYSAC.  The event will be held over two weekends:


  • ·       May 5th  and 6th – Racing from Portishead Marina. A maximum of 6 races over 2 days consisting of laid courses and around the cans from a Committee Boat. Start time of the first race on May 5th  will be no earlier than 0900 and on May 6th  no earlier than 0900.
  • ·       May 19th  and 20th – Racing in Cardiff and Penarth Roads & Cardiff Bay. A maximum of 6 races over two days consisting of laid courses and around the cans from a Committee Boat. Start time of the first race will be no earlier than 0900 on May 19th  and no earlier than 0930 on May 20th.

There will be two fleets. The IRC Fleet will be racing for the Shanghai Cup and NHC Fleet for the Nimrod Cup.

Portishead Cruising Club (PCC) has reserved tables for food and drink at the Hall and Woodhouse Restaurant, Portishead Quays Marina on the evening of Saturday 5th  May at 1900. An informal gathering will be held in the Royal Inn on the evening of Friday 4th for those who wish to attend.

Cardiff Bay Yacht Club has reserved the function room at CBYC for food and drink on the evening of Saturday 19th May.


Presentation of prizes will be on Sunday 20th  May as soon as practical after racing in the CBYC



There will be a non-counting passage/coastal race from Portishead to CBYC for those who wish to enter. The idea of this race is to promote more collaborative coastal racing in the Bristol Channel. Further details will be published in the SI’s prior to the event starting.




The race will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) of the ISAF, this Notice of

Race, all as modified by the Sailing Instructions.





Yacht racing can be dangerous. The attention of owners, skippers and crew is drawn to RRS Fundamental Rule 4: "A yacht is solely responsible for deciding whether or not to start or to continue racing". The safety of a yacht and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the owner or owner's representative who must do their best to ensure that the yacht is fully found, thoroughly seaworthy and manned by an experienced crew who are physically fit to face bad weather. They must be satisfied as to the soundness of the hull, spars, rigging, sails and all gear. They must ensure that the safety equipment is properly maintained and stowed and that the crew know where it is kept and how it is to be used.


Cardiff Bay Yacht Club and other organising clubs accept no responsibility or liability for loss of life or injury to members or others, or for the loss of, or damage to, any vessel or property.

Yachts must hold a valid and current boat insurance covering them for third party claims of up to £3,000,000 for the entire duration of the racing.




This is an Open Race for self-righting single hull yachts. Competitors must have read and accepted the NoR and have submitted and completed an entry form with the appropriate fee.


All boats shall clearly display a sail number.

All boats shall carry an operational marine VHF radio telephone.


Boats will be allocated into IRC and NHC fleets as the Race Committee see fit.

All skippers/owners must complete an entry form. All competitors under 18 years of age must present a completed Consent Form to CBYC Office or Race Committee before their first race. One such form will be required for each skipper with whom that junior sails.


All non CBYC member skippers and crew will be considered as temporary members for the duration of the event.

All boats competing in any race shall carry safety equipment as listed on the CBYC website may be scrutinized for compliance.





Entries shall be online via the CBYC website:



Fees shall be paid online, by BACS. Entries will be accepted until Saturday April 28th. Late entries will only be accepted at the discretion of the Race Committee.

A completed entry form and the £30 entry fee must be submitted for each yacht. Food and drink on at H&W Restaurant on 5th May and CBYC on 19th May is not included in the entry fee.


Discounted (1/2 price) berthing at Portishead Marina will only be available to boats that have entered and paid for the competition. CBYC will forward a list of these boats to the Marina; boats not included will not be eligible for the discount. The discount will apply for 4th, 5th and 6th May only.


CBYC will offer free pontoon berths for all competitors from April 28th  to May 27th.

CBYC reserves the right to accept or refuse any entry. Entry will only be accepted when the entry form and fee are received.




Sailing Instructions will be posted on the CBYC web site by April 28th.





Racing will be in 2 fleets; IRC and NHC. All boats entering the IRC fleet must carry a valid

IRC certificate.




The low point scoring system, in accordance with RRS 88.3, will be used.


Yachts scoring DNF will score points for the number of starters in the race + 1. All other yachts not classified (ie DSQ, OCS etc) will score points for the number of entries + 2.


Yachts still racing at a race time limit will be awarded an equal share of the available points had they all completed the course. If there are no finishers, then no points will be awarded.

Discards. 5-7 races sailed – 1 discard, 8-12 races sailed – 2 discards.


The coastal race from Portishead to CBYC will be non-counting toward the overall series.




Prize giving will be on Sunday May 20th following racing in CBYC clubhouse.


Shanghai and Nimrod Trophies will be awarded to the winner or each fleet as well as1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded as the race committee sees fit.
