Cardiff Bay  is a 500 acre empoundment with access to the Bristol Channel via the 3 locks which operate 24/7, this allows racing  be round the cans races  over HW  ( most races ) and then in each series there is one Low Water Race duration up to 6 hours, maybe 2 races over low water and one or two races in the Bay .  The Bristol Channel provides a challenging area for racing with a wide range of tidal flows and sea conditions .

Generally there are from 20 to 30 vessels  out on the water divide amoungst the fleets  and new commers are warmly welcomed  to either the IRC or NHC Classes.

Occasionally a Weekend  of racing under the  SWOG banner is organised to and from other ports .This is separate to the main series and ties in with meeting a group of sailors  who want to cruise in company .
